Introduction
Career
After studying Literature and Arts, Nicolas Ruelle first expressed himself through music by working as a composer, notably for French television. In the desire to have more freedom and space for creation, painting was a natural progression. It allowed him to give substance to his “musical visions” through movement, rhythm, space and light.

The landscape pushed towards abstraction is the mysterious region where I wish to draw the eye. Through my painting, I search for this free space where the natural elements and the spirit meet, somewhere between matter, shadows and light. Stripped of the superfluous, freed from strict representation to go to the essential, the canvas becomes this secret place where we can share our memories and emotions, a landscape of common meditation. – Nicolas Ruelle
Style
Starting from the sculpted material, the first gestures of the artist are energetic and spontaneous. The paint is applied with a knife and spatula, sometimes with construction tools. This first step aims at making the light emerge from the material, like a melody, a few notes torn from the silence.
The brushes take over in a second, more meditative phase, to soften the forms and diffuse this light. A very personal gesture to approach his key themes: nature and its elements, movement, the search for freedom. With the desire, by all means, to go inside oneself to draw this energy which puts us in balance with the world.
The choice of the abstract landscape allows him to express a lyrical breath. Listening to all that is alive, his painting is inspired by reality but echoed with all the emotions and imagination that we carry. It is a bridge between nature and the intimate.
Exposure
From 2008 onwards, Nicolas Ruelle’s work was shown in the first galleries in the Parisian Carré Rive Gauche and on the Côte d’Azur. He then had a series of exhibitions in France, Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxembourg. His paintings are now collected internationally.
